The commemoration of an historic event will take place this week in Bombala, and everyone's being invited to attend.

On the 13th of December 1962, the last morse code telegram in NSW was sent from the Sydney GPO in Martin Place to the Bombala Post Office, and this Thursday the 13th a telegraph operator who was actually working nearby in Eden at the time will be recreating the event.

That's at the Bombala PO at 11 am Thursday, and telegraph operator Phil McGrath is inviting everyone to come along and help celebrate how things used to be, 50 years ago.

Fatigue is being investigated as a potential cause of the accident at Rock Flat near Cooma that claimed the lives of two people yesterday.

Shortly after midday, a 45-year-old Canberra man and a 40-year-old woman from Queanbeyan were travelling in a Toyota Hilux ute when it ran off the road and rolled several times.

The highway was closed for several hours in both directions, and while the Southcare helicopter was initially tasked to the scene, it was subsequently called off.

Inspector Chris Varley from Monaro Area Command says that investigations are continuing and a report is being prepared for the state coroner.

The NSW Government says that it has no plans to amalgamate councils in the Monaro and across the state, in response to a recent report that suggests a secret plan is already in place to force such boundary changes.

The United Services Union is not convinced, and warns that tens of thousands of jobs will be lost if the government pushed ahead with the alleged plans, rumoured to begin as soon as March next year.

General secretary, Graeme Kelly, believes that Barry O'Farrell is readying to break previous promises to not force amalgamations, and the USU is prepared to fight back.
