The Federal Government's new Schoolkids bonus is set to start benefitting families across the monaro this week.

Eligible families will receive a one off payment of more than four hundred dollars for each child in primary school, and more than eight hundred dollars for those in high school over the next fortnight.

Eligibility is determined if a family is currently receiving the Family Tax Benefit Part A payment.

Federal Member for Eden-Monaro, Mike Kelly , says it'll be a welcome relief to local parents.

Snowy Mountains residents are being encouraged to lend a hand and volunteer with fundraising efforts ahead of this year's White Balloon Day.

It's an initiative with the goal of making Australia the safest place to raise a child, and is being organised by Bravehearts.

Founder of the organisation, Hetty Johnston, says that they're hoping to raise half a million dollars for child support services this year.

The Federal Member for Eden-Monaro, Mike Kelly, has announced that the ACCC will introduce a carbon tax hotline and online complaint form for consumers in the Snowy Mountains who think they are being ripped off by businesses using the new tax as an excuse for unjustified price rises.

The carbon tax should only increase prices by less than one cent.

The new Australian Consumer Law has the power to prosecute, with penalties of up to 1.1 million dollars.

Dr. Kelly says that the ACCC will come down on any businesses that are making misleading claims about the carbon tax like a tonne of bricks.
